The Pinnacle, literally

Today we started with coffee at the vrbo. A trio chose dirt and a trio chose street. I went with Dangerous Dan and Steve from San Jose to run part of section 4 of the Backcountry Discovery Route (BDR).

We got moving by 0730 with temps in the mid 40’s, rode down to Buena Vista, filled up on fuel and hit the BDR.

The Colorado BDR runs across the state, south to north. Section 4 is 145 miles.

We were aware that the first bit was “sandy”. Little did we know that it would be a major obstacle for 3 well seasoned riders on 600 pound adv bikes. Steve delicately placed his bike on the ground a few times, then Danger and I both buried our bikes in the sand. After we all got going again, Steve sat his bike down again. After righting him, we walked thru the sand about 275 yards up hill and found good ground. The decision was made to soldier on.

The first 38 miles took about 2.5 hours. the second 30 mile section took another 1:45 or so. After lunch in Leadville, we beelined back to our lodging and called it a day.

Oh, I left out the part where I ended up in the lead and took a wrong turn, sending us on a wild goose chase up about 11,000 feet. It was only a mile or so but the entrance was a steep angle with lots of divets. I was not voted in as top leader of the day.

Now we’re kicking back, waiting for the slackers to get in. Burgers and dogs on the grill tonight.

It’s always an adventure!
