Day 4 – Steve : Farmington to Grand Junction

We knew it was going to be hot in the desert so we decided for an early start. 6:15 departure to beat the heat to 4 corners and the Moki Dugout. Boy did we not know what today had in store.

I was ready at 6:15. Packed up and out at the bikes.

We got going around 6:30 and made it to Four Corners a few minutes before they opened. Danger paid for our entry. We used the facilities and the got the pics.

From there we headed to the Moki Dugout. So far the temps were in control. We realized that we should get gas so we took a detour into Mexican Hat. Not much to the town and didn’t get a lic of the hat, but we decided to do the Valley of the Gods on a whim.

So glad we did. We had a blast off pavement and had many laughs. From the entrance with loose sand to breaking bike parts to wayward water jugs. (Videos will come as a separate post)

From there we headed up the Moki Dugway

At the top we had a meeting of the minds to decide what was next. We decided to go look for lunch. As we kept going we wound up in Blanding at a diner and had a great meal.

We then decided the rest of the day. The choices were: Moab at over 100 degrees for hours or head towards the hills to keep the temps down.

Well we took a right in Monticello and headed towards Ridgeway CO as a GPS mark. We mostly stayed out of the heat with only a few times in the high 90’s.

We took a short break in Ridgeway for Gatorade and a snack. Then headed towards Grand Junction. We did see over 100 for a while and topped out at 104, but we were all playing with cooling vests and scarves. Turns out they work.

Nearly 12 hours on the road in the Summer heat in the desert and we survived. We arrived at the hotel and I got a “dog room”. All took quick showers and then headed out to repeat the restaurant I went to a few days ago.

Tomorrow I load the bike back on the truck and head towards Breckinridge to meet up with the Pontiff(and his cardinal) and Alf
