The longest day

Yesterday had to be the longest day yet… we were on the road at 0615, leaving the Air Force Lodge in Watson Lake, YT. Early in the day, we saw bears and a fox, accentuating the wilderness.

The roads were rough but until 3 pm, nothing special. As we got closer to Dawson City, a couple of forest fires popped up. The last of which was just a few km off the road. The smoke was light and the road was open, so we kept going. Once clear of the fires, we wicked it on up for a bit.

About two hours out, we ran into road construction. After sitting a few minutes, during which we filtered to the front of the line, the pilot truck arrived and we took off. Except we didn’t TAKE OFF, we meandered for almost 30 minutes through the dirt, gravel and mud. Finally we came to the end and lit out again. The road was in decent shape and relatively vacant. We sealed smooth for a bit and then hit gravel. The gravel was deep, loose, dusty and covered the entire road. Not the road conditions one might want for the end of 13 hours on the road. While it seemed forever, it was only 20-25 minutes. We got passed by a couple of cars, the dust slowing us down more. It finally ended just in time for us to catch an evening shower. The last few clicks into Dawson City were uneventful.

We stayed at The Downtown Hotel in the heart of Dawson city’s dirt street metropolis. After wrangling a parking space and checking in, we grabbed dinner and recanted the day’s ride. It was 10 pm before I could blink an eye. Despite the party celebrating the equinox, we turned in to rest up for another day..

Worn out and we aren’t halfway yet…
